Roughly — Terms of Use
These terms cover the Roughly iPhone app and the Roughly Pro subscription. Using the app means you accept them. If you do not, delete the app. You must be at least 13 years old to use Roughly.
What the app does
Roughly estimates the calories and nutrients of a meal from a photo you take, using an AI model, and keeps a diary of what you eat and how your weight changes. It also works out a daily calorie target from the goal and body data you enter.
Estimates are estimates
Every number the app shows is an approximation produced by an AI model from a photograph, a barcode or a description. It can be wrong, sometimes badly. A photo does not show what is inside a dish, how it was cooked, or how much oil went into the pan. Treat the figures as a rough guide you decide what to do with, not as a measurement.
Roughly is not a medical device and gives no medical, nutritional or dietary advice. Do not use it to manage a medical condition, to dose medication, or in place of a doctor or a dietitian. The calorie targets it suggests come from a standard formula, not from anyone who knows your health. If you have a medical condition or a history of disordered eating, are pregnant, or are under 18, speak to a professional before changing how you eat.
Roughly Pro
- Roughly Pro is an auto-renewing subscription, sold monthly or yearly. What it unlocks, what it costs and the length of any free trial are shown in the app before you confirm the purchase.
- Your Apple Account is charged when you confirm. The subscription renews automatically for the same period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends; Apple charges the renewal within the 24 hours before that.
- A free trial converts to a paid subscription unless you cancel before it ends. One trial per subscription group, per Apple Account. Any unused part of a trial is forfeited if you buy the subscription early.
- Cancel or manage the subscription in iOS Settings under your name → Subscriptions, or through Settings inside the app. Deleting the app does not cancel it.
- Apple handles every payment. We never see your card details. Refunds are Apple's to give — ask at reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Prices may change. A price change on a subscription you already hold takes effect only after Apple has told you and you have agreed to it.
Fair use of the AI service
Every analysis costs us money at an AI provider, so each install has a daily cap on requests. Hitting the cap loses nothing: the meal stays in the app and you can retry later. The caps may be adjusted as costs change, and a subscription buys a larger allowance rather than an infinite one.
Do not try to work around the caps or the device check, automate requests, resell access, or send anything through the app that is illegal or that is not a photo of food. We may block an install that does.
Your data
Your diary stays on your iPhone and in your own iCloud; we run no server that holds it. Photos and a short context go to our proxy and an AI provider only to produce an estimate. The full account is in the privacy policy, including how to delete everything.
Availability
Roughly is a small independent app built on AI providers we do not control. The service can be slow, briefly unavailable, or changed. We do not promise uptime, and features may be added or removed between versions. If we ever shut the service down, we will stop selling subscriptions and say so on this site with as much notice as we can give.
Apple's part in this
- This agreement is between you and us. Apple is not a party to it and is not responsible for the app or its content.
- Your licence to use Roughly is personal and non-transferable, on Apple-branded devices you own or control, under the Usage Rules of the App Store Terms of Service.
- Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app.
- If the app fails to conform to any warranty that applies, you may tell Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price; beyond that Apple has no warranty obligation for the app.
- Apple is not responsible for handling any claim about the app — product liability, a failure to meet a legal requirement, or a claim under consumer protection or privacy law.
- If anyone claims the app infringes their intellectual property, we, not Apple, are responsible for dealing with it.
- You confirm you are not located in a country under a U.S. embargo or designated as supporting terrorism, and that you are not on any U.S. list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
No warranty, and what we owe
The app is provided as it is, without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. We are not liable for any loss that comes from using the app or from acting on its estimates. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to what you paid us for the subscription in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here takes away consumer rights your local law gives you.
Changes
If these terms change materially, the new version appears at this address with a new date. Continuing to use the app after that means you accept it.
